I commute on an XSR900. It handles beautifully in the corners and absolutely flies with the throttle pinned. It has more performance and ability then I would ever need on the road and the real kicker is it is also very comfortable, very easy to commute on and not bad of fuel.

I think the simple fact is that motorcycles in general have reached such a level of performance that even cheaper bikes like the XSR can far surpass the limits of the road and most riders.

None of their bikes are bad and some are very reliable but so many share parts with decade old kit and there just doesn’t seem to be the finances there to truly innovate.

Maybe Suzuki will drop sports bikes altogether and focus on electric road bikes and commuters. With the way the economy is going and the shrinking market for superbikes, this may be a very wise idea.

In my motorcycling youth, ownership of my ‘Marlboro’ livery Yamaha RD500LC was directly inspired by the racing I watched. It was a young man’s choice, for young man’s reasons. It is also the only bike I can say was inspired by racing. In retrospect it was also not a great solution for my needs.
I much prefer the versatility of my modern motorcycle… and it’s also faster, corners/stops better and is safer too. Modern bikes are generally so good, it is no longer necessary to have a race bike to get the riding thrill.

Apropos Bob, however many technologies have gradually percolated from motogp prototype machines to serial production.

I do wonder what is the long term strategy for Suzuki Motorcycles.

GSX-R 1000 may be removed from EU due to completion of derogation rights.

So using racing as a marketing tool doesn’t carry weight with me. The bike needs to sell itself based on my needs, personal fit and riding style. As for R&D, racing made sense many years ago before computers, improved material science and bigger budgets from diversified sales growth. Honestly, all any manufacturer needs is a really good development rider or two and access to a track and proving grounds. Even my amateur self could be a test rider for sport touring or adv. I log 30-40k a year as it is. Doing it full time for a living, I could easily do 200k a year for a factory. Just give me a company card and expense accoount and turn me loose.
